The critical care unit consists of a total of 16 beds (8 level 3 and 8 level 2) situated on the first floor. Raigmore Hospital is a busy DGH with ~460 beds catering for all medical specialties, surgery with the exception of cardiothoracics/neuro and the Highland Trauma unit. Due to the geography of the Highlands we admit paediatric patients for stabilisation and immediate management pending PICU retrieval. We also admit patients from NHS Highland’s rural general hospitals in Caithness, Fort William and Skye.
NHS Highland covers a population of approx 320 000 spread over an area of 15 000 square miles – 40% of the Scottish land surface. The catchment area comprises the largest and most sparsely populated part of the UK with all the attendant issues of a difficult terrain, rugged coastline, populated islands and challenging internal transport and communications infrastructure.
We provide ICU training as part of the North of Scotland rotation and teaching for medical and nursing students from the University of Aberdeen and University of Highlands and Islands. We have clinical fellow posts for those wishing to gain further critical care experience, and medical electives can be arranged. If you are interested, please contact us.
